Motivation Monday : Favorite Strength Training

***The Lose Your Booty Diet Bet Challenge starts today! If you have signed up and would like us to feature your progress on our blogs, please complete this form!!!! ***

I have to admit something today... I honestly prefer cardio workouts to strength training. I have always preferred dancing, running or using an elliptical. My husband, on the other hand, loves lifting. In the evenings after Caleb goes to bed, it's not unusual to see him lifting during our favorite shows.

I actually have a lot of strength in my legs. You'll catch me maxing out the squat machine in the gym without any training. My biggest trouble area is my upper body strength. I despise push ups, pull ups, or any other kind of "ups"!

One of my sweet friends told me about an awesome website to finally help me with strength training....BodyBuilding.com! There is so much information on the site. You can find a plan or you can simply search for workouts that target certain muscles. There are also videos to show you have to do it correctly. It can't get much easier than that!

I want to know what I'm capable of...

I took a fitness class in college that taught me how to determine the amount of weight you should be lifting to increase muscle strength. If you are using weight machines, simply find out the maximum amount of weight you can do one time on each machine. Take 75% of that and there's the number of pounds for reps.

(Again, I'm not a pro at this! Check with your doctor and/or trainer before proceeding!)

  1. I too have more strength in my legs than my upper body. I've never been able to do a pull up. Push ups I wear out after about 10.

  4. I'll have to check out that website. I really need to be SHOWN how to do things ... I can't figure it out by reading descriptions, even if there are step-by-step photographs. I really struggle with all UPs too. I can do some pushups, but pull-ups? Not happening. I do really like being able to flex and feel my triceps. I remember once having hubby compliment me on my arms, and I'd really like to get back to that! I feel like I have pretty good muscles, they are just still covered with a layer of donuts.

    1. The videos are excellent! I've normally stayed away from lifting because I don't know how to do it correctly. They show you how!

  7. I´m new in the gym and are like other, a bit scared of the free weights (there are only men in that area in my gym) but I´m fine with the machines and do them all. Are they good too or is the free weights the best?

  8. That's really cool info on how to calculate your max weight! I recently started a "Shaping Up For Summer" link-up, which will run every Saturday through May, and I would LOVE it if you wanted to link up your fitness posts. Hope to see you there!
